The Prosecution Project (tPP) is Seeking a New Director of Audits
Position Title: Director of Audits
Term: 1 year, renewable
Start Date: May 2024
Reports to: Deputy Director
The Prosecution Project (tPP) is a long-term platform for collecting, analyzing, and disseminating data to better understand how political violence–terrorism, extremism, hate crimes, protest–operates in the United States. tPP’s data has been used in scores of media, legal, governmental, and policy releases since the project began in 2017. Currently tPP operates with a team of more than 40 volunteers from around the US. The project is currently seeking a new Director of Audits as our current Director, in the position since 2019, is departing to join other opportunities.
Auditing involves the post-coding and post-verification inspection of data set entries and source files. The Director of Audits, as a senior member of the project, oversees this process to ensure accuracy and adherence to established protocols before data is marked for public release. The Director of Audits serves to lead the audit team, providing guidance, direction, and support to ensure that all team members understand their roles and responsibilities. An auditor’s primary responsibility is the final review of coded cases for accuracy and formatting. This includes identifying and correcting errors, ensuring compliance with internal control procedures, and maintaining data integrity.
Responsibilities:
- Coordinate and execute the final audit of tPP cases.
- Conduct periodic reviews of past cases to identify areas for improvement in reliability and accuracy.
- Ensure consistency in the coding of open-response variables across cases.
- Assist the Deputy Director in the management of audit teams, including task delegation and performance monitoring.
- Collaborate with the Leadership Team to develop and refine protocols for coding, verifying, and final auditing processes.
- Identify opportunities to streamline audit processes, enhance efficiency, and improve overall quality–gather feedback from auditors and coders and implement continuous improvement initiatives to drive excellence in auditing practices.
Requirements for Position:
- Attention to detail: The ability to identify and rectify small, critical errors is essential for ensuring the accuracy and reliability of the final audit.
- Familiarity with tPP: Candidates must have at least six months of experience as a coder with tPP to understand its objectives, processes, and data requirements.
- Compliance expertise: A thorough understanding of established internal control procedures is necessary to ensure adherence during the auditing process.
- The Director of Audits plays a crucial role in maintaining the quality and integrity of The Project’s data. They work closely with the Deputy Director, audit teams, and Leadership Team to continuously improve auditing processes and contribute to the project’s overall success.
Compensation: tPP is an all-volunteer research program. Students may receive course credit for their work, and tPP is pleased to assist team members to seek funding at their institution (including through Federal Work Study) which we have successfully done in the past. tPP leadership strives to routinely make available opportunities to join grant-funded research, apply for monetary awards, locate opportunities for publishing, engage in conference travel, and receive mentorship from leaders in the field.
To Apply:
Internal Candidates: tPP team members may apply for the position by emailing a brief letter of interest (2-3 paragraphs) to Executive Director, Dr. Michael Loadenthal (Michael@theprosecutionproject.org), copying the Deputy Directors Madison and Lauren (madison@theprosecutionproject.org, lauren@theprosecutionproject.org).
External Candidates: Candidates interested in the position who are not currently members of tPP should send a formal letter of interest (1-2 pages) and current resume/CV to the same addresses. In your letter, please explicitly focus your remarks on the responsibilities and requirements as outlined above. External candidates will complete a preliminary 10-month probationary period before beginning their Directorship term–4 months as a Pre-coder and 6 months as a Coder.
