As has happened in the past, tPP is currently being defamed and intentionally mischaracterized in a series of viral news stories. These stories repeat several false claims we will briefly address below:
- Claim: tPP excludes the killing of Charlie Kirk, and this proves its data is biased.
- False. Robinson is included here: https://data.theprosecutionproject.org/?tab=In+Progress¤tPage=1&numShown=10&search=tyler+james+robinson&showAll=true
- Claim: tPP excludes the Summer 2020 protest or lists only 5 leftist cases from the 2020 BLM wave of protests.
- False: We have maintained the largest database of these cases since Summer 2020. There are more than 1,700 cases here: https://data.theprosecutionproject.org/?tab=Summer-Fall+2020+Protests¤tPage=1&numShown=100&showAll=true
- Claim: tPP does not include the assassination attempt targeting President Trump.
- False: Ryan Routh’s (and a related co-defendant) case is here: https://data.theprosecutionproject.org/?tab=In+Progress¤tPage=1&numShown=100&showAll=true&search=Routh. The Thomas Crooks case is excluded, as he was not charged with a crime. We track criminal cases. The shooting allegedly by Cole Tomas Allen will be included, but has not yet, as we have a backlog of dozens of cases to enter first. The case will be added when researchers catch up. This is an all-volunteer effort, and NEVER meant to serve as (or claim to be) a real-time event tracker. It is a retrospective data set for research.
- Claim: tPP does not include the shooting by Elias Rodriguez at the Jewish Museum event.
- Claim: tPP is inflating the number of right-wing cases by including drug sales.
- False: As per our inclusion criteria (see https://theprosecutionproject.org/faq/), we include both cases where an identified extremist/terrorist group provides material support or otherwise ‘supports political violence’ through its actions. Selling narcotics by, for example, the Aryan Brotherhood is precisely that. Just as we include cases of cartel violence from groups listed as FTOs by the government (see https://data.theprosecutionproject.org/?tab=In+Progress¤tPage=1&numShown=100&showAll=true&search=Sinola), we also include those who provide financial support through apolitical crimes to known extremist/terrorist groups.
- Claim: tPP is inflating the number of right-wing cases by including nonviolent protests such as abortion clinic blockades.
- False: As per our inclusion criteria (see https://theprosecutionproject.org/faq/), we include any felony crimes–terrorism, extremism, political protest, and hate crimes–that involve a socio-political motive. Opposing abortion and blocking a clinic is a social protest against abortion. Including it in our data does not make the claim that this is violence (this is why we have a variable called ‘people v. property’), only that the crime is a felony and motivated by a social change agenda. If one seeks to exclude these from their analysis, use the filter function and exclude ‘state speech only’ cases under Reason for Inclusion
The claims made in these stores are simply not true and are leading to threats against our project and staff. We request that people learn the facts.
